Can Miles Smith Double in the 8/16?: In the past four years, only once has someone doubled to win the 2A indoor 1600 and 800 (Terrell Green, 2013). Miles Smith has a chance to do it this season after winning both events at the 2A East Regional Championships. He has shown an impressive range of events throughout the season, from a 1:07.89 500 to a 4:28.77 1600. He has yet to lose to a 2A runner in the 1600; the next-fastest time from a 2A state qualifier is 4:36.94 by Anthony Gordon, one of Smith's top challengers. Gordon recently finished a close second to Brian Cave at the 2A West Regional Championships. After a slow start to the indoor season, the reigning 2A state cross country champion doubled at 2A West in the 1600 and 3200 and could be Smith's top challenger in the 1600.
The 800 is probably Smith's best event. At most meets this season, Smith ran the extremely difficult 1600-500-800 triple, and without the 500 he should be very well-prepared for the 800. In the 800 this season, Smith is undefeated against runners not named Jason Tyler, who's running in the 3A state meet. Smith's teammate Gabe White finished second at the 2A East Regional Championships and could be Smith's top challenger, along with 2A West regional champion Sean Renehan. I checked all the way back into the mid-80s and couldn't find a 2A indoor state championship where teammates went 1-2 in the 800, so Smith and White have an opportunity to do something very unique here. The aforementioned Gordon can't be counted out either: he ran 1:57.15 last outdoor season at Riverdale Baptist.
