Can Maria Coffin Break 17 Minutes For 5K At The Seahawk Invite?

Boys 5K Preview

Different story for the boys 5K, which should see three girls in contention for the win between Northern-Calvert's Matt Bennett, Severna Park's Andrew Forsyth, and Loyola-Blakefield's Frankie Legambi.

At last year's Seahawk Outdoor Invitational, Forsyth was a close runner-up to graduated teammate Kevin Hines with a personal best 5K performance of 15:17. Bennett was a distant third in that same race at 15:53. Expect a much closer race between the two this weekend as Bennett is coming off running a two mile PR of 9:25 at New Balance Nationals Indoor and has now won two 3A state titles in his senior year at Northern-Calvert.

Forsyth finished 4th in the 4A state cross country race this fall and placed 3rd in the 4A state indoor 3200 meter race with a season best of 9:42. Forsyth has always seemed to thrive better at the longer distance races.

More interesting storyline is if Forsyth or Bennett could break Forsyth's older brother Ryan Forsyth's meet record of 15:08.88 from the 2013 Seahawk Invitational. Forsyth recently decided that he will be joining his brother competing collegiately in the Rockies in signing with Colorado State University (Ryan Forsyth runs currently for the University of Colorado).

Can't sleep on Legambi though. After all, the Loyola-Blakefield senior was the Seahawk Cross Country Invitational champion this past fall racing against Bennett on the South River High School school grounds in a time of 15:47. Legambi also finished the cross country season right on Andrew Forsyth's heels at the NXN Southeast Regional with a 20th place finishing 5K PR of 15:41.

More coverage to come from the Seahawk Invitational and elsewhere in Maryland this weekend!
