McDonogh junior Dalton Hengst made his 2016 season debut in style, clocking a 15:44 personal best in a win at the Barnhart Invitational. Last year's MIAA and MD-DC Private School champion will have his sights set on even bigger goals - including a berth to Footlocker Nationals - later this season. Down in North Carolina, Bethesda-CC's Adam Nakasaka was Maryland's top finisher at the Adidas XC Invite, clocking a new personal best of 15:53, good for 13th in the championship race.
Meanwhile, Richard Montgomery's Rohann Asfaw was busy making history at the Oatlands Invitational in Virginia, becoming just the second Maryland boy to win the varsity A race in meet history (the other: 2008 Footlocker National champion Solomon Haile of Sherwood). Asfaw's 15:47 5K is mere seconds behind Hengst's on the state leaderboard and Asfaw is still undefeated this season. Other winners in-state included South River's Nick Boogades, who won the Hood College Invite in 16:07, and Westlake's Jay Hall, who won the Prince George's County Invitational in 16:19.
