Aside from the usual slate of county league meets, this week featured some rare mid-week invitationals in the western part of the state. Allegany County was the site of the Progressive Physical Therapy XC Invitational which featured a matchup between two of the top 1A runners in the state. Smithsburg's Will Merritt defeated Southern Garrett's Declan Horner, although Horner's Rams would finish first in the team scores as they aim for their second state title in three years.
On Wednesday Woodsboro Park was the site of the Mountain Run, which - as its name suggests - involves a pretty good-sized hill. Century's Jacob Spera ran away with the win leading the Century boys to a statement victory over their crosstown rivals at Liberty. The girls race featured even more team excitement, as Julien Webster led the Catoctin girls to a one-point victory over the Century girls.
