2A State Recap: Jackson Captures Historic Third Straight Title

Girls Recap

While the boys champion was a cross country rookie, the 2A girls winner was much more of a familiar face. Patuxent's Hayley Jackson won her first 2A state cross country title as a sophomore in 2014 and added her third in a row on Saturday. It is her ninth title overall between cross country and track, and she will be looking to add a few more this track season. Jackson is the first female runner in Maryland to win three straight state titles since Century's Maura Linde did it from 2008-10.

Catoctin's Julien Webster took the race out fast, but Jackson took over the lead before heading up the dip for the first time. The race was still close, however, heading into the final mile as Hereford senior (and also a cross country rookie) Kelly Wesolowski closed the gap. Jackson's strength experience on Hereford's course proved to be too much and she opened up her lead heading into the finish, eventually winning by 23 seconds.

Wesolowski was one of three Hereford girls to finish among the top seven as the Bulls won their second straight 2A state title. She was one of only two seniors among the state-winning squad as the Hereford girls will look for a three-peat next season.
