The deepest and most competitive region in the 2A classification will have a bit of a new look in 2017. Gone are Marriotts Ridge (2nd place in girls race), Catoctin (5th place) and Oakland Mills (3rd place in boys). On the girls' side, five of the top nine would-be returnees will be in different regions in 2016.

However the incoming teams should more than make up for the losses. The Poolesville girls and boys both won 3A West regional titles in 2016 and will return state title hopefuls Nandini Satsangi and Ryan Lockett (who won the state championship this past fall as a junior). Another top returnee is Damascus' Heather Delaplaine, coming off her second straight top-six finish at the state meet last November. And both the Oakdale boys and girls finished in the top three in 3A West last year and featured strong classes of 2020. This region might be the deepest it's ever been in 2017.
