First day of action from the 2017 MPSSAA Track & Field State Championships kicks off on Thursday with the 1A and 2A schools converging at Morgan State University in Baltimore. Both Thursday and Friday's running events will be LIVE streamed on MileSplit.com with archived coverage as well of those races.
Lets take a look at each race on Thursday at the Maryland State Meet. There will be 3 finals section on time contested in the 4x800 meter relay, 3200 meter run, and 4x200 meter relay on Thursday. Meanwhile, preliminary rounds of the 100 meter dash, 100/110 meter hurdles, and 200 meter dash will also be run.
1A Girls 4x800m Relay (Finals) - The Patterson Mill girls come as the favorites as the only team to have broken 10 minutes this spring with the performance coming recently at the 1A North Regional. Smithsburg has the next fastest season best at 10:13, while the Snow Hill girls come from the Eastern Shore have to be considered a threat with Emily McAllister on anchor leg. Patterson Mill has the fastest open 800 runner in 1A though in Katie Eckart at 2:21 and another 2:30 leg in Marissa Lapinsky.
2A Girls 4x800m Relay (Finals) - South Carroll and Hereford have had some great battles in this event over the last few indoor and outdoor state meets. Expect more of the same on Thursday with South Carroll at 9:35 and Hereford at 9:45 as the fastest two squads qualified. South Carroll posted their season best performance last week at the 2A West Regional and only graduated one leg from their 2016 state champion squad. Hereford, Catoctin, and Century expect to be their toughest challengers. Catcoctin could be an upset pick with 3 girls who have run 2:25 or faster in the open 800 this spring. South Carroll counters with Allie Zolkiewicz at 2:21 and Jamie Anderson at 2:23 for the season bests of their top legs.
1A Boys 4x800m Relay (Finals) - This race could be the most thrilling and closely contested of all the 4x800 meter relays. How about only a hundredth of second difference between Fairmont Heights at 8:28.86 and Boonsboro at 8:28.87 for the season best times of the top two squads. Then only two seconds separates the next pack of squads including Cambridge-South Dorhcester, Snow Hill, Fort Hill, and Smithsburg ranging from 8:30 to 8:32 this season. The Smithburg boys are the defending champs in the event, but only return one runner albeit a good one in Foot Locker finalist Will Merritt.
2A Boys 4x800m Relay (Finals) - South Carroll could potentially sweep the 2A state titles in the 4x800 as their boys have vastly improved this year coming off a season best 8:12 victory at the 2A West Regional to make them the top seed in the race. The 2A West Regional was essentially a state meet preview as the top 5 times all came from the race with South Carroll closely followed by Liberty (8:13), Middletown (8:16), Century (8:23), and Oakland Mills. The order could certainly change up on Thursday with Liberty as the defending state champs returning 3 of their 4 legs from last year, while Middletown has one of the state's fastest half milers in Riley McDermott (1:53 800m PR) on anchor leg.
1A Girls 100m Dash (Prelims) - Smithsburg's Lauryn Daniels was a state runner-up in the event last spring and is the top returnee, but her moving up to first place in this year's 100 dash will be no easy task with several others with the same idea. Several finalists from last year's state meet are back who have improved their times including Allegany's Aubree Boyle, who defeated Daniels at the 2A West Regional last week (12.75 to 12.89). Another rising contender is the 1A North Regional champ Breanna Perry of McDonough, who threw down a 12.54 clocking last weekend. Most of these girls have run in the mid 12's, so will be interesting to see if someone sets the tone on Thursday in the prelims with a time in the low 12's.
2A Girls 100m Dash (Prelims) - One of the state's top hurdlers in Sydney Williams of Lackey will get a tune up to warm up her legs from the hurdles prelims to quickly follow as the top entrant in the 2A girls 100 meter dash. Williams clocked a personal best earlier this month at the SMAC Championships in 12.01. Her teammate Dominique Jeffery expects to join her in the finals with a 12.20 season best herself. Bayside League champ Mykaelah Jones (12.25) of Wicomico, Baltimore County champ Janiya Valentine (12.36) of New Town, and 2A West Region champ Mik-yla Stephens (12.32) of Oakland Mills are the next best challengers to break up Lackey's plans of a 1-2 showing.
1A Boys 100m Dash (Prelims) - They are all in lane 4 for reason in each of the 3 preliminary heats for the 1A boys 100 meter dash. Pikesville's Ellis Brown, Hancock's Ean Mann, and Fairmont Heights' Vincent Lockard all come in as the top contenders in the event. Mann has the fastest F.A.T. time of the spring with his 10.97 clocking at the Washington County Championships, while Lockard just ran his 11.07 personal best in taking the 1A North Regional title. Brown is trying to win state titles in all 3 sprint races and his toughest test may be in the 100 with a 11.03 personal best in the event.
2A Boys 100m Dash (Prelims) - A notable absence is defending 2A state champ Will Moten of Westlake, who also hurts Westlake's state team title changes as well. Opens the door for a group of contenders. Howard County champion Cameron Vereen of Oakland Mills was a state runner-up last spring and has the fastest season best at 10.79. Newton's Jordan Cofield had upset Moten for the indoor 55 meter dash title with a 6.51 clocking, while just recently won the 2A North Region title and has run 10.95 this spring. SMAC champion Hezikiah Hawkins of Thomas Stone is a relative unknown, but has quietly become one of the top sprinters in Southern Maryland with a 11.00 personal best in the 100. Bayside League champ Nayel Oge of Parkside has dipped under 10.90 as the 2A East Regional champ. 2A West Regional champ and Carroll County runner-up Henry Seabrook of Century also will be in the mix after a third place finish in last year's 2A state finals.
1A Girls 100m Hurdles (Prelims) - Three sub 17 second girls come all from the 1A West Regional in Boonsboro's Emily Kimball, Fort Hill's Alyssa Mullery, and Allegany's Natalie Gray. Gray is the top returnee from last year's state meet when she finished as a runner-up in the finals a junior. However, she finished third at the regional meet behind Kimball and Mullery who finished in a near dead heat as both were timed at 16.64 with Kimball as the winner. They will all be in the same prelims heat (heat #2) too on Thursday!
2A Girls 100m Hurdles (Prelims) - Lackey senior Sydney Williams will be looking to not only repeat as 2A state champ in the 100 meter hurdles, but also one of her final races to see if she can lower that 14.29 PR closer to 14 seconds flat. First though she will have to withstand a formidable challenger in Friendly's Karryngton Harrison. After all, it was Harrison who spoiled the indoor state meet for Williams upsetting her in the 55 meter hurdles finals. Williams should have confidence though after defeating Harrison at the 2A South Regional last week and posting a season best time of 14.52.
1A Boys 110m Hurdles (Prelims) - McDonough's Brant Butler will be looking to add an outdoor 110 meter hurdles title to his indoor 55 meter hurdles title from this past March. Did not see any results on Butler until the regional meet when won the 1A North Region title in a 15.32 personal best. Northern Garrett's Austin Evans was the 1A West Regional champ last week with a 15.30 personal best (actually a time he's posted 3 times this season) and was the state runner-up in last year's meet.
2A Boys 110m Hurdles (Prelims) - Three returnees are back from last year's state finals led by Frederick Douglass senior Kollin Smith as the fastest entrant with a 14.37 season best at the Prince George County Championships. Next fastest is SMAC conference champion Alex Strong of La Plata with a 14.80 season best. The returning state finalists with Smith both won regional titles last week in Andre Turay of Oakland Mills at 2A West and Kaya Simpson of Harford Tech at 2A East.
1A Girls 200m Dash (Prelims) - Many of the same names from the 100 dash trials earlier will be in the mix here including Smithsburg's Lauryn Daniels and Allegany's Aubrey Boyle from the 1A West Regional. Boyle has the fastest time on the season with a 25.78 best. Meanwhile, 1A North Regional champ Breanna Perry of McDonough has also dipped under 26 seconds this spring. She defeated at the defending state champ Rakiya Taylor of Surrattsville, who certainly cannot be counted out to repeat as appears to be in her best shape of the season. She won her title last year in 26.31 and just ran 26.08 at her regional meet.
2A Girls 200m Dash (Prelims) - With defending champ Sydney Williams from Lackey opting to focus on other events (as if not busy enough with 2 other prelims prior on Thursday), Bayside League champ and 2A East Regional champ Keashia Johnson of Queen Anne's as well as 2A South champ Malia Watkins of Frederick Douglass appear to be the top competitors coming into the state meet. Both have been running in the mid 25's this spring.
1A Boys 200m Dash (Prelims) - The first prelims heat here sound set the tone with Ellis Brown of Pikesville and 1A West Regional champ Ean Mann of Hancock racing head to head. Both have run 22.54 or faster this season. In the second heat, the top two returnees from last year's 1A finals will be featured in Daimian Thornton (1A East Regional champ) of Snow Hill and Tim Allen of Fairmont Heights. The fastest regional winner from 1A North in Vincent Lockard of Fairmont Heights will close out the 3 heats after running a 22.33 personal best last weekend.
2A Boys 200m Dash (Prelims) - In last year's state meet, the Westlake duo of Will Moten and Thomas Alcorn went 1-2 in the 200 meter dash finals for 2A. This year, Alcorn will need to represent the defending champs alone in the 200. He should get pressed in his prelims heat by the likes of indoor 55 state champ Jordan Cofield of New Town. Only Bayside League champ Nayel Oge of Parkside at 21.90 has run a faster time this season than the SMAC champion Alcorn at 21.96.
1A Girls 3200m Run (Finals) - Could we a see a girl break through with her first sub 12 minute race to take the title? Smithsburg's Erica Lindsay leads the group with a season best time of 12:12 and coming off a win at the 1A West Regional to hold off the indoor state champ Elly McGillivray of Brunswick for the win. McGillivray could certainly make it an indoor and outdoor sweep of the titles. A runner to watch is freshmen Logan Bierer of Pikesville, who has run 12:20 this season and won the 1A South Regional title in the event. McGillivray and LIndsay were 3rd and 4th respectively in last year's outdoor state race.
2A Girls 3200m Run (Finals) - Two 2016 Foot Locker finalists are found in this race between Patuxent's Hayley Jackson and Catoctin's Julien Webster. Jackson ran an incredible 10:29 personal best and state leading performance a few weeks ago at the SMAC Championships, while Webster ran a personal best herself of 10:51 at the Frederick County Championships. Add in Hereford's Kelly Wesolowski (10:58 at 2A North Regional) and Middletown's Reilly Caldwell (11:01 PR), the 2A girls 3200 race could see four girls break 11 minutes in the same race! Jackson has been virtually unbeatable when it comes to state championship races, but will be extra motivated to race well this weekend after missing last year's outdoor state meet.
1A Boys 3200m Run (Finals) - After missing all of indoor and the early part of the outdoor season, Smithsburg's Will Merritt is back to add to his career total of 1A state titles starting off with the 3200 on Thursday. The Foot Locker finalist this past fall, Merritt will have some closer competition than prior state meets which he has competed in with three other guys who have broken 10 minutes this season. Declan Horner of Southern Garrett being the closest competitor with a 9:48 season best and finished right on Merritt's heels at the 1A West Regional. Meanwhile, Bohemia Manor has a pair of talented sophomores in Zachary Laird (9:52) and Alex Longeway (9:55) who went 1-2 at the UCBAC Championships. Merritt's limited season has not allowed him to run a fast 3200 yet as his 10:14 season best is a far off his 9:34 PR from a year ago. He'll have his chance at the state meet.
2A Boys 3200m Run (Finals) - A couple of runners knocking on the door of their first state title in sophomore Justin Diehl of Calvert and senior Nick Tilson of Liberty come in as two of the pre-race favorites following their regional victories. Diehl has the fast times with a 9:29 season best under his belt from the SMAC Championships, while Tilson has the championship racing pedigree having consistently finished high in state meets for both cross country and outdoor track over the years. Meanwhile, also in this race will be Westlake's Jay Hall, who has won the past two indoor state titles in this event despite Diehl having his number in recent races this spring. A total of 8 guys have broken 10 minutes this spring in 2A.
1A Girls 4x200m Relay (Finals) - A handful of teams have broken 1:50 this season led by Bayside Conference runners-up Cambridge-South Dorchester at 1:46.59. Their team didn't run as fast at their regional meet, but may have not ran their "A" squad in a 1:51 performance. Joppatowne at the 1A North Regional had the fastest time last week at 1:48.96 with two other squads right behind them in the race under 1:50 in Patterson Mill and Perryville.
2A Girls 4x200m Relay (Finals) - The Lackey girls could potentially run away with this race if they put their best squad on the track that ran 1:41.88 at the Bishop McNamara Mustangs Invite in late April. With Sydney Williams opting not to run the 200 prelims at the state meet, she may have been pulled from that race to insure her team is ready to roll for a state title in the 4x200. Their best competition should come from the 2A West Regional champs from Oakland Mills, who clocked a 1:44.04 best last week and have the state championship credentials winning the 4x100 last May in a 2A state meet record time.
1A Boys 4x200m Relay (Finals) - Defending champions Fairmont Heights are certainly in the hunt with their 1:31.72 season best, but may be chasing after two teams who just threw down 1:30 performances at their regional meet victories last week in Surrattsville at 1:30.84 from 1A North and Edmondson-Westside at 1:30.95 from 1A South.
2A Boys 4x200m Relay (Finals) - The Largo boys were moving at the 2A South Regional to clock a time of 1:28.93, which ranks them MD #9 in the event and makes them the top seed coming into the state meet. Century at 1:29.57 and Westlake at 1:29.62 also broke 1:30 at their regional meets with season best races. It will be an early battleground event between those two teams as they are projected to be the top contending squads for the 2A state title with a single digits margin separating them.
