Saturday's Howard County Invitational was one of the biggest of the week in the state of Maryland, and attracted many of the top teams it has in the past. After last year's sun-soaked race in the midst of a September heat wave, the conditions were much more favorable to runners this time around. These athletes and teams took full advantage at Saturday's Howard County Invitational.
Deamer Goes Sub-16, Just Misses Course Record
The Centennial High School cross country course was adjusted before the fall of 2015, shortening the distance from 5K to three miles. Since that time only Good Counsel's Jack Wavering had gone under 16 minutes on the course (15:57 at the 2015 Howard County Invitational). Deamer, however, became the second on Saturday, missing Wavering's mark by mere milliseconds. It was the second major invitational victory of his career and in doing so beat Bel Air's Kieran McDermott, who had beaten him three times in 2016.
Beyer Gets Revenge At Familiar Course
The last two times that Emily Beyer had run at the Centennial High School course, she had finished second - both times to Jasmine Tiamfook. This year, however, Beyer had no intention of letting somebody else cross the line before her as she broke away for a dominant 26-second victory. We will see if the same race plays out later this season at the Howard County Championships. Tiamfook and River Hill, however, did pick up a narrow victory over fellow HoCo rivals Atholton.
Severna Park Boys Run "B" Team, Win
After their "A" squad took home a victory at last week's Seahawk Invitational, the Severna Park boys brought along their "B" squad for Saturday's race at the Howard County Invitational and won a close team battle with River Hill. The Falcons also dominated the open division and their margin of victory in the varsity race could have been larger, as a couple boys in the lower divisions ran faster than some of their varsity squad.
Don't Count Out The Mount Hebron Girls
The Mount Hebron girls varsity squad finished eighth out of 18 teams on Saturday, but it could have been a much different story. Not only did the Vikings field the varsity girls individual champion, but the freshman/sophomore and open race individual champions as well. Both girls ran faster than their #2 runner in the varsity race and could have boosted their team score considerably had they all been in the same race. If you factor in those runners in the team scores using MileSplit's virtual meet, the team standings end up like this:
