Baltimore County Championships- And then Came Day Two

The second day of the Baltimore County Championship began with a cloud covered sky, a strong wind and cool temperatures and finished up with sun and a beautiful afternoon. The meet was missing the presence of Randallstown High School which was reeling from the shooting at their high school on Friday and the prayers and thoughts were with those athletes and families throughout the day.

The day began with the 4x200 relay which was too have been contested on Wednesday but due to the lateness of the meet was heldover until Saturday. The girls event was a dead heat with Western, Perry Hall and Overlea, but a dropped baton by Overlea put them out of contention. Western went on to win in 1:49.94 with Perry Hall second in 1:52.08. The boys race was just as close, but with all lanes cutting in after two legs it created a mess at the last handoff with all the teams attempting to hand off at the same time. A few teams had to stop to find their anchor leg and two stepped off the track to avoid other runners. Pikesville came on to win in 1:34.87 with Western right behind at 1:35.52.

The 1600 boys race went out at a pedestrian 2:20 with Thaler of Pikesville, Cutting of Towson, Jaeger of Parkville and Knox of Dulaney dragging the field on their heals. At the 800 Parker of Woodlawn sprinted to the lead with the pack following closely. Seven of the nine entrants were still altogether at the 1200 mark which was hit in 3:28. This made for an all out sprint the last 400 with Henry of Woodlawn taking the lead with Graves of Catonsville right on his back. They stayed this way with Henry winning in 4:32 and Graves one second back. The freshman from Woodlawn, Dwight Parker, had another PR in third with a 4:37. The remainder of the pack came across the line between 4:39 and 4:41.

Parker of Woodlawn made an impressive debut at the County Championships with a leadoff 2:04.5 leg on the 4x800 relay. A 9:56 3200 and a 4:37 1600, all of which were PR's.

The girls race had Michelle Donadio of Franklin and Val Steen of Hereford trying to wear out Lauren Capone of Towson with a quick 70 and 2:29 splits, but Capone quickly ran them down the last 800 and won in 5:16 with Donadio second in 5:20.

The 800 races were runaways for Woodlawn in both the boys and girls race. Both races were decimated by either no=shows or athletes deciding they had enough after spending all day out in the wind, chill and sun. The girls 800 went to Leslie Conley in 2:21 and Sam Henry in 1:59.8 after a 55 second first 400. Eric Graves of Catonsville pulled out a second place with a 2:02 out of the slow heat.
