A sixth-place finisher in the 300 meters at last year's indoor state meet and in the 400 meters at the outdoor state meet, River Hill's Austin Weltz is aiming for more in his senior season. Last weekend he took advantage of the banked track at the Armory in New York and clocked the fastest 300 meter time (35.63) of any 3A runner so far this season. Only two other 3A runners (North Point's Kroy Myers and Huntingtown's Anthony Smith) have run faster than Weltz's Sportsplex season best time of 36.39.

Bella Whittaker may have stolen the show a few weekends ago at the Sportsplex when she set Howard County Winter Festival meet records in the 300 and 500, but Mount Hebron junior Sierrah Matthews finished second in each race, setting new 3A top marks in each instance. No other 3A runners have come within even a second of either of her season best marks so far this winter.
