Not only was the 2017 edition of the race the first without DC schools, but a lot of a loaded MIAA field did not race, including junior Camden Gilmore and sophomore Owen Johnson. Meanwhile, Beth Tfiloh senior Joshua Rosemore ran away with the MIAA C Conference title by over 30 seconds and could have possibly competed for a small school individual title. On the team front, both Loyola (the MIAA champions) and Gonzaga (the WCAC champions) would have been in the mix along with the champions from Mount St. Joseph.

Perhaps the biggest loss from the previous meet as a result of not having DC schools was that of National Cathedral senior Page Lester, the defending large school champion and two-time runner-up before that. Lester had one of the best seasons of any DC runner in recent history, clocking a 17:34 5K and eventually finishing 14th at Foot Locker Nationals. Once again many of the top runners from the IAAM did not compete, either.
