The MPSSAA approved the contesting of spring championships - including the outdoor track and field state meet - on Wednesday.
These will be the first official postseason events since the 2020 indoor track and field championships in February 2020.
The regional and state championship format and schedule will be unlike anything seen in recent MPSSAA history. In order to keep the number of contestants and teams at a minimum, teams will first compete in sectional regional meets. Each region will be divided into two sections of no larger than eight teams, and the top four individuals or relays in every event will advance to the regional meets. From the regional meets, two individuals or relays in every event will advance to the state meets.
Each team will be permitted to enter two individuals in every individual event and one relay in each relay event at the sectional regional meets.
The state championships will be held in the outdoor stadium at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex on the weekend of June 18-19. 1A and 4A schools will compete at separate times on Friday June 18, followed by 3A and then 2A on Saturday.
There are currently no set dates or locations for the sectional and regional meets. Sectional meets will take place between June 7-10, while the regional meets will take place on June 12, 14-15. Find all of the sectional and regional assignments on the next page!
