Meet info / Heat Sheets

The Montgomery Invitational has always been one of the premier invites in Maryland each year. While the pandemic sidelined the invite for a few years, the meet returns in 2023 with over 2000 entries and will feature some of the best talent in Maryland and surrounding states. Check out the top races and events to watch.

Brody Buffington -While not an event, The Catoctin Senior might be the most exciting person to watch at the Montgomery Invitational. Buffington has sprinted out of the blocks this year (figuratively and literally) and currently has MD # 1 Marks in the 55 dash, 300 dash, and Long Jump (23-7). His 55 dash is currently # 1 in the nation. He will be entered in all 3 at the Montgomery Invitational and will be the favorite to win all as well.

Girls 500 - There are 7 girls who entered at 1:20 or faster, led by Langly standout Corrine Jaggard entered at 1:18.75. The 7 girls are separated by only 1.3 seconds which should make for a highly competitive and exciting race. The top entries include Jaelynn Blackwell (CH Flowers), Cate Christopher (Richard Montgomery), Aaliyah Jalloh (Thomas S. Wootton), Carolyn Hultman (Walter Johnson), Isabelle Griffith (Rising Sun), and Alyssa McCall (Rising Sun).

Boys 800 - It's very hard to run under 2 minutes for an 800 indoors. Only a handful of boys so far have done it this season however a bunch more might be added after this race. Colin Abrams (Magruder) is the top seed entered at 1:56. He ran 1:52 last year and was one of the fastest freshmen in the United States. Jalen Riley (C.H. Flowers) Michael Crisp (Georgetown Prep) Ryan Wahler (Towson) Luke Doerschman (Calvert Hall), Da'shawn Keller (Calvert Hall), Tyler Jackson (Potomac Falls) and Connor Finnegan (Potomac Falls) all have the ability to go sub 2 and win this race.

Girls Mile / 1600 - Several girls will be trying to break the magic 5-minute barrier in this race. Meredith Gotzman (St. Johns College) comes in with the top seed time of 5:03. She will be pushed by Grace Finnegan (Richard Montgomery) who has run under 5:10 multiple times, and Alexa Avila (Montgomery Blair) who is coming off a fantastic cross country season. Temi Ariyo (Overlea) might be the sleeper in this race as she has not been pushed in a 1600 so far this year and easily won the 3200 at the Howard County Winterfest earlier this season, running 11:08. Look for her to be with the leaders the whole race.

Boys Mile / 1600 - Just as there are several girls who will be trying to break 5 munites, there will be several boys trying to break 4:20. Ashton Tolson (C Milton Wright) comes in with the top seed at 4:23. He will be pushed by Christian Brower (Long Reach), Rei Rahsaan Nettey (Calvert Hall), Gage Osborne (Northwest), Noah Fisher (Richard Montgomery), Ryan Wahler (Towson), Alexander Contreras (Catoctin), and George Brennan (Hayfieldield). All of these athletes have the ability to flirt with the 4:20 barrier and make this a very exciting race to watch.

Boys 3200 - The winner of the boys 3200 will most likely have to run under or at least close to 9:30 to take the win. Ashton Tolson (C Milton Wright) has the top seed at 9:29. Ryan Connelly (Calvert Hall) Henry Hopper (Wilde Lake), Kieran Mischke (Towson), and Hayden Goodman (Woodbridge) all have the ability to make a run at sub 9:30 and possible run a new MD #1 time in the process.

Boys 55 Hurdles - The top 7 entries are under 8 seconds which should make for a very competitive and exciting final. Dominion Jacobs (Huntingtown) comes in with the top seed of 7.60 and has looked very strong in the first part of this indoor season. Roberto Terrell (Quince Orchard), Justin DeVaughn (Mervo), and Olaoluwa Fagbenro (DuVal) have run under 7.8 seconds and will be fighting for the win.

Girls 4x200 Relay - St. Johns College comes into the meet with the fastest seed time of 1:34. While that might be a little bit of a stretch, they are a very strong sprint school and will be in contention for the win. C.H. Flowers and Milford Mill also have the ability to run low 1:40s and challenge St. Johns for the win.

Boys 4x2 Relay - The most exciting race on an Indoor Track in the 4x200. The chaos that ensues after the first handoffs is always exciting and the teams who usually win are the ones who can execute clean handoffs during the race. There are 9 schools entered under 1:33 seconds. C.H Flowers has the top time at 1:30.00 but they are followed very closely by Patriot, Mervo, Montgomery Blair, Milford Mill, Largo, Bowie, Henry A. Wise, and Poly. Due to the nature of this event, any one of these teams has a chance to win!

Boys Triple Jump - Three boys are entered in the Triple Jump with marks over 44 feet. Demond Whitley (Clarksburg) comes in with the top seed at 44-11. Joseph Ernest (Potomac Falls) and Roberto Terrell (Quice Orchard) are right behind him at 44-6 and 44-4 respectively. There are also 6 additional boys entered at over 40 feet.

Girls Pole Vault - Five girls are entered with marks over 10 feet. The group is led by MD #1 Gracie Emerick (Damascus) with a PR of 12-0. There are only 11 girls at 10 feet or higher in the state this year, so with 5 of them entered at this meet, it might be the most competitive Pole Vault competition between Maryland athletes this year!
