Class 4A Boys Preview
Team Preview - For the first time in 11 years there will be a 4A Boys State Champion not named Severna Park or Dulaney. The two former 4A schools, now 3A schools, have combined for the last 10 titles dating back to 2012. (Walter Johnson won in 2011 and there was no Season in 202 due to Covid). I don't think the current 4A teams were sad to see them go to 3A.
This race looks exciting as there are several teams in the mix to win. Crofton were winners of the 4A East Regional and have looked strong this season. Leonardtown finished only 9 points behind Crofton at the 3A East regional and only 12 seconds slower when looking at their 1-5 average. Urbana has also been red hot lately. They won the CMC, Frederick, and 4A West Regional. Winston Churchill has also looked strong at various points this season and only finished 1 point behind Urbana at the 4A West Regional. They may be peaking at the right time. As with most State races, it will come down to which team's # 4-5 runners can run the best. All of these teams are pretty strong up front and will have 1-2 athletes medal, the question will be whose #5 will finish first!
Individual Preview - The Individual race looks like it is James Partlow's (Thomas Johnson) to lose. The #2 ranked runner in Maryland has not lost all year and he has competed in some pretty competitive out-of-state invitationals. The Senior has run 15:11 this year for 5k and while he may have some company for the first mile, it would be a huge upset if he does not win this race.
Battling for second looks to be Nathaniel Swanson (Winston Churchill), Mateo Gros-Slovinsky (Walt Whitman), Tsedeke Jakovics (Old Mill) and Alejandro Berrio (Seneca Valley). Berrio was able to beat both Swanson and Gros-Slovinsky at the 4A West Regional last week but the three athletes have raced multiple times this year with all 3 beating each other at some point in the year. Jakovics ran a blistering 15:24 to win the 4A East Regional on the super fast Chesapeake course, but earlier this year he struggled to run well at Bull Run. The big question for him is can he handle the hills and run well on a course that is not pancake flat?
MileSplit Maryland Prediction:
Individual State Champion: James Partlow (Thomas Johnson)
Individual Runner-up: Alejandro Berrio (Seneca Valley)
