New Balance Local Heroes Winner: Jillian Colwell Todd Grasley Sep 03, 2013

For Dublin High School senior Jillian Colwell, a New Balance Local Hero is, "someone who is beginning to see and understand the benefit of selflessness and the richness of community spirit." Colwell exhibits both characteristics through leadership in cross country and track and field and volunteering with the local SPCA. She began volunteering with the East Bay SPCA in Dublin nearly three years ago because she says the prevention of animal cruelty is a cause her and her family wholeheartedly believe in.

Volunteering comes naturally for Alexis Bell. The Kenwood  senior has been giving back to the community since she was in the 8th grade. The first opportunity came with the Baltimore Animal Rescue Center (BARC). She started out helping with the promotions and helped raise money for the organization. From then on, she says she has participated every year.

Over three hundred of pairs of shoes made their way to Andros Islands in the Bahamas this April thanks to Oak Hall senior Brittney Olinger. Olinger started ReRun Sneakers to provide running shoes and supplies to aspiring runners in under privileged areas. As a runner she understands the effort that goes into every stride and the equipment needed to do so.

Brendan Remington spent hours upon hours sitting at the hospital, waiting by his brother's bed side. Brendan was thirteen. His brother Luke was ten and dying of Leukemia. The St. Thomas More senior lost his brother in April of 2010. After weeks of feeling down, he decided rather than thinking about how he's gone, how can they help other kids and families in the same situation. He says that is when they decided to start Luke's League.

When tragedy strikes, the community answers. That is exactly what thousands of people around the country did for those affected by the Boston bombings. For Weymouth sophomores Kacie and Kelly Higgins the event happened in their backyard and they wanted to do something to help the victims. Kacie says that is when they came up with the idea of marathon bracelets.
