Mt. Hebron sweeps the 800 with state best times from Johnson (2:02) & Banham (2:24)
Boys Highlights:
- Mt. Hebron junior Justin Johnson had eye opener day in his first meet of the indoor season winning both the 500 and 800 in state leading times of 1:08.19 and 2:02.88. Johnson had Oakland Mills senior Kelsey White to contend with the 800 who pressed him to the line as a runner-up in 2:03.84.
- In the boys 300 meter dash, Glenelg junior Jared Allen had the clear top time among all 14 heats with his MD #3 36.76 clocking. Not to be confused with the 11 year NFL All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen. Allen also ran a leg on the winning 4x200 meter relay, which clocked a state best time of 1:35.52 with their quartet.
- Reservoir senior Kelvyn Sosoo did not run a so-so time in the 55 meter dash as he rolled to a 6.64 victory against some of Howard County's fastest.
- River Hill junior Rahul Reddy should be seeing a sub 10 minute performance soon into the indoor season based off his season opening 10:10 win on Saturday at PG. Reddy was a 9 second winner over Mt. Hebron senior Abraham Samuel (10.19).
- Howard's Theo Braimoh had arguably the best performance out of the field events with the senior leaping to a winning mark of 20'11" in the long jump. Braimoh was a double winner also with the best leap as well in the triple jump at 42'8.25".
Girls Highlights:
- Mt. Hebron sophomore Alexandra Banham, the 3A East Regional cross country champ, picked up where she left off last spring nearly matching her outdoor PR in the 800 with a 2:24.54 win in her first race indoors (did not run indoor as a freshmen) to move to the top of the state leaderboard. The Mt. Hebron girls also enjoyed relay success on the day taking first in the 4x800 in a time of 10:27.46 and the 4x400 in a time of 4:34.08.
- River Hill saw one of their new freshmen in Sdyney Robinson make quite a first impression in winning the 500 meter dash in a time of 1:24.00 and then leaping to first in the long jump with a mark of 17'3", while also taking runner-up in the 300 as well in the 300 with a 42.47 clocking.
- Robinson was second in the 300 to Wilde Lake's Jamila Brown, one of the state's fastest returnees in the event as she posted a season opening time of 41.68 for the win. Brown ran 41.13 for 5th in the 3A state indoor race last February.
- In a display of their distance depth, the River Hill girls had four girls run under 6 minutes in the 1600 meter run led by sophomore Jasmine Tiamfook winning in a time of 5:29.54. Atholton freshmen Alaina Bosmans was one of the runners to break up the River Hill with a second place time of 5:37.
- A close race and finish in the girls 3200 that came down to the final lap between Wilde Lake senior Julia Orloff and Mt. Hebron sophomore Mt. Hebron with Orloff taking the two second win in 12:28 followed by Beyer at 12:30 for second.
- Reservoir has a stout hurdling duo in senior Toni Jennings and junior Janay Cooper-Marshall as that was on display with their 1-2 finish in the 55 hurdles with a 9.24 clocking by Jennings for first and Cooper-Marshall right behind her at 9.29 for second.
- Atholton sophomore Asha Washington, a state qualifier last year indoors in the 55 meter dash, started off her season with a win and new PR clocking of 7.52.
- River Hill senior Sophie Caplan cleared over 15 feet for the day in winning the pole vault at a clearance of 9'6" as well as the high jump with a height of 4'10". Caplan is the state's top returnee in the pole vault.
- Howard junior Bayli Smith recorded the state's best mark in the shot put with her throw of 37'1". A 3 1/2 foot PR for Smith who had ended her 2015 outdoor season with a best mark of 33'7.50" for 8th place in the 4A state meet.
