The Mid-Distance Double: The 500-800 double at the state championships is by no means an easy one to pull off, given both the nature of the races and the limited rest between the two. Three of the top runners that PG County has to offer have separated themselves from the rest of the 4A field in the 500: Cameron Burgess, Nikolas Thomas, and Gerald Amobi. Both Burgess and Thomas could potentially run the 4x800 for their teams, but the race should be fast nonetheless, with all three having broken the 1:06 mark this season. Then they will come back for the 800, one of the most intriguing races of the meet because there is no clear cut favorite - for proof, go watch the finish of the 4A East Regional 800. This is definitely a race that could be decided in the final 50 meters.
They will have their share of challengers in the 800: Liam Walsh has the fastest 800 among 4A boys so far this season, and Menelik Eldridge came within came within .06 seconds of a win at the 4A East Regional Championships. Also, keep an eye on Burgess: not only did he qualify in the 300, 500, and 800, but his team also qualified all three relays. With only four available events to run, he could potentially end up sitting out the 500 or 800 to help a relay try and bring home a state title.
