The bigger story in this race is who is not in this race as the indoor state champions and fastest 2A squad this spring in Oakland Mills with their 8:05.86 season best in winning the Howard County Championships will not be racing in the state meet. They were unfortunately disqualified at the 2A West Regional for being out of the exchange zone for a handoff. How that happens in a 4x800 is beyond me, but it has opened the door for other teams to chase after the state title in 2A.
As a result of Oakland Mills' DQ, Liberty won the 2A West Regional title with Nick Tilson's return helping their team's outcome and time at 8:16.41. Tilson was one of the best cross country runners in 2A this past fall, but was absent indoors playing on the basketball team for Liberty.
Another team that could be in great position to take the 2A title in the 4x800 are the SMAC conference runners-up from La Plata, who also have run a season best time of 8:16. La Plata will have one of the best in the race on anchor leg in indoor 1600/800 state champion Miles Smith. Smith has run 1:55.75 in the open 800 this spring.
Both South Carroll (8:18.09) and Century (8:18.20) ran under 8:20 last week right behind Liberty at the 2A West Regional, so those teams could very well change their position order on Thursday at the state meet for first place.
