With Smithsburg's Will Merritt out with an injury this winter, the door has opened for Southern Garrett Declan Horner to step into the statewide spotlight. He's been fairly quiet this indoor season but has turned in a pair of eye-opening out-of-state performances in the past month. The biggest came in Ohio this past weekend, where he clocked a personal best and MD #4 3200 of 9:29.64 at the MileSplit Scholastic Showcase. If he repeats that performance at the state championships he would be the first boy in 1A to crack 9:30 in the event.
