2A Girls State Meet Preview By Event

55 Meter Dash

Will there be a freshman state champion this indoor season? Seneca Valley's Giselle Badoo certainly has a shot. Her 7.39 effort at the Montgomery County Championships was the fourth-fastest by a 2A girl this winter. (Photo by Brandon Miles)

The 2A 55 meter field is looking more open than it did perhaps a month or two ago. Walkersville's Autumn Parson clocked an early-season time of 7.13 at the Terry Baker Invitational in December, but the rest of the field has been slowly catching up. Seneca Valley freshman Giselle Badoo won the final at the 2A West Regionals and is one of multiple freshmen girls who could take home a state title next Monday.

Sydney Robinson has remained one of the top sprinters in the state following her return to River Hill for her junior year. She won the 55 and 300 at the 2A East Regionals and finished second in the 500, and will have a chance to win each of those events next weekend. An important note: the 55 finals (should she advance out of the prelims) would be her fourth race of the day, after the prelims, 300 and 500.

Don't forget about the reigning state champion, New Town's Janiya Valentine. She has yet to run outside the Armory this winter, but clocked a 7.42 season best at the 2A Central Regionals and ran 7.21 in her victory last winter.
