This Decade in Review: Top 500 Boys in the 800

Back in March 2011, two of the state's best half-milers of the decade squared off at New Balance Indoor Nationals up in New York. Georgetown Prep's Russell Hornsby and Good Counsel's Thomas Tallerico (above) both kicked the new decade off with a bang, as they finished fourth and 14th, respectively, in the championship 800. Tallerico was also part of the 2010 Good Counsel team that ran 10:04 in the distance medley relay at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. He competed for the University of Pennsylvania after graduation.

Speaking of Hornsby, he held the fastest indoor time of the decade in the 800 until Kyle Lund edged past him in his own record-setting run at this year's indoor state meet. The son of singer Bruce Hornsby, Russell stood out in the mid-distance events, running 1:50.82 in his senior outdoor season and helping the Hoyas win an indoor 4x800 national title. He was part of the Georgetown Prep teams that ran 7:43 in 2010 and 7:45 in 2011, and ran 1:49 for the University of Oregon in college.
