Name: Thomas Smith IV
School: Calvert Hall
What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment? Why is that?
First time running at Penn Relays. It was surreal, I've never seen a track meet this live before. Plus the Jamaican food was bangin.
Was there a certain moment or breakthrough race/meet when you realized you would be able to compete at a high level?
This year when I ran 7.77 indoors, at new balance. I realized I'm wayyyy better than I thought.
What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
I've been injured so many times in these last 4 years, and most of it was the same hamstring. This outdoor season was my first season where I wasn't hurt
If you are writing a letter to your younger freshman self, what advice might you give them?
Always believe in yourself, even when times get hard and you aren't doing what you want, always be ten toes down.
If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why? (If you only run Track, then don't worry about explaining why).
I would pick Track because running miles at a time is ridiculous.
What are your post-high school or college plans? If Running in college, explain why you picked that school.
I'm going to run at North Carolina A&T. I went there because of Coach Ross and I wanted to be a part of that team that was headlining every week.
What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?
I don't even have a pre-race snack, I just be starving myself.
Name the top Maryland Cross Country or Track moment(s) you have witnessed. Could be by the level of greatness or just something that really stood out to you.
I watched Bullis run that record-breaking 4x2. I also saw as our 4x1 broke the state record at Penn Relays this year. And I was a part of our 4x2 that was US#1 indoor.
Who would you like to say "thank you" to?
Everyone
Is there anything else you would like to mention that stands out over the past 4 years?
I think there should be a Maryland meet where every high school in the state is invited and can participate. Kind of like States but private and non-affiliated schools are there too.
Watch Thomas Smith and his Calvert Hall Teammates talk about their 4x200 win at NBN.
