Salute to Seniors: CMW Distance Runner Sophia Skinner

Name: Sophia Skinner

School: C Milton Wright HS

What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment? Why is that?

the 800m I ran at states this year. It was extremely rewarding to see my training pay off at the last meet of the season. To be seeded last and finish in the top 10 was a very proud moment.

Was there a certain moment or breakthrough race/meet when you realized you would be able to compete at a high level?

My first race back senior year, when I hit a personal best when I thought my training wasn't doing as well as I hoped

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?

My mentality getting the best of me, especially when racing in the 1600m. not knowing the right time to make a move and regretting my decisions after the race.

If you are writing a letter to your younger freshman self, what advice might you give them?

race fearlessly and remember that your mind is your biggest competitor

If you had to pick: Track and Field or Cross Country, and why? (If you only run Track, then don't worry about explaining why).

Track. As much as I love the atmosphere in cross country, the fast-paced races and the different events are what makes Track more enjoyable. You can explore different options and find what you love to race.

What are your post-high school or college plans? If Running in college, explain why you picked that school.

I'm running cross country and track at Towson University. I loved the layout of the school and how the coach valued attitude and work ethic.

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?

Chewy Bars! I always have at least 10 of them while I'm waiting for my event.

Name the top Maryland Cross Country or Track moment(s) you have witnessed. Could be by the level of greatness or just something that really stood out to you.

Watching one of my friends, Elizabeth Pickett run her mile personal best at states this year. watching her race has been so much fun.

Who would you like to say "thank you" to?

My coach Donnie Mickey, my parents, and my teammates who are my best friends who I'm going to miss a lot when I leave for college in August.
