Landon Invitational 2010

Bethesda, MD
Hosted by Landon School

Meet Information

Determined to build on a gutsy Tuesday-afternoon performance that left them just behind a powerful Quince Orchard squad, the Landon Bears without an injured Mac Hightower '12 battled it out with seven other teams at the Landon Invitational early Saturday morning. Despite an array outstanding performances, the Bears were unable to catch the Heights and settled for second-place honors.
The Heights' Gregory Hadley secured top individual honors in the varsity boys race, with Edward Douglass of St. Andrew's and Naimbai Njerakey of Wheaton rounding out the top three finishers; Landon Captain Ryan Dougherty '11 ran yet another outstanding race for the Bears en route to a fourth place finish. Alex Hadley and James Herrick took fifth and tenth respectively to help Heights knock off their host opponents; Henry Duncan '12 (sixth) and Adam Brill '13 (ninth) both earned key top-ten spots for Landon. Billy Kuhn (11th) and Brian Liu (17th), both '12, took home top-20 honors ahead of Josh Michael '13 and Conor Laird '11.
Led by top individual finisher Sophia Baker, the St. John's varsity girls squad pocketed four top-ten spots and hammered out a 12-point victory over Emma Tizard (second) and Maryvale. Sarah Landis of St. John's took third ahead of top SSSA finisher Lizzie Zulauf (fourth) and teammate Mollie Shedlick (fifth); Jazana Goolsby of SSSA (sixth), Jackie Moritz (seventh) and Claire McDowell (eighth), both of Marylvale, Grace Hassler of St. John's (ninth), and Amanda Bochniak (tenth), also of Maryvale, rounded out the top ten overall.
In JV action, the Maryvale girls outran St. John's by a single point thanks to first- and second-place finishes by Kayleen Schmidt and Colleen Cook. Wendall Brown of Henry A. Wise won the JV boys race by nearly a full minute, after which Landon Captain Jack Falvey '11 and rookie teammate Kevin Soraci '14 crossed the line in second and third, respectively. Unfortunately for host Landon, St. John's took six of the next eight spots and earned a dominant team victory; the Bears beat out the Heights by a single point for runner-up honors.
Thanks to all parents, family, and friends who came out to cheer on the athletes and helped make the 2010 Landon Invitational a great success; special thanks to Mrs. Kuhn, Mrs. Falvey, Mr. Brill, and the Dougherty family for their assitance on race day and unwavering support of Landon cross country.
