McDermott entered the 2016 cross country season in shape and ready to roll, clocking a 9:46 two mile at the early September Mustang Invitational. McDermott cracked 16 minutes at both the Barnhart Invitational and Spiked Shoe Invitational, where he won with a 5K personal best of 15:44.70. He won five straight races in the middle of the season, including the Harford County and UCBAC championships and 4A North Regionals. McDermott went for it all at the 4A State Championships, leading throughout the first mile at Hereford. He paid for it a bit at the end of the race, but still finished in fourth place, a huge improvement from his 44th-place showing in 2015.
WATCH McDermott throw in a huge second-half surge to take the title at the 2016 4A North Regionals!
