Week in Review: Maryland HS Cross Country, Oct. 11-16

9th Annual Gunpowder Falls XC Invitational: 

Once again, the annual Gunpowder Falls XC Invitational took place at Gunpowder Falls State Park in Kingsville, Md. There were a total of five races: Boys Varsity; Girls Varsity; Boys Fresh-Soph; Girls Fresh-Soph; and the Open Race. 

Boys Varsity Race:

For the Boys Varsity race, Walter Johnson senior Andrew Schell was victorious with a sub-16 5K time. He finished with a time of 15:55.70, 21 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Winston Churchill senior Sebastien Breton came in second, finishing with a time of 16:16.30. Just three seconds behind was Dulaney junior Tyler Dailey with a time of 16:19.80. For fourth place, Gaithersburg senior Sadou Sow snagged the spot with a time of 16:26.60. Sow was the last finisher that had an elite performance. The fifth spot was taken by another Winston Churchill senior, Julien Higgins, with a time of 16:40.00. 

After taking two spots in the top 5, Winston Churchill took home the top honors with a mere 33 points. Second was Walter Johnson, led by Schell, with 94 points. Third was Towson, led by Ryan Wahler (10th, 16:57.20) with 119 points. 

Girls Varsity Race:

For the Girls Varsity race, Broadneck senior Mollie Fenn was the first-place finisher with an impressive time of 18:46.80. Not much further behind was Sherwood freshman Avery Graham with a time of 18:49.80. The third-place spot was taken by Catonsville junior Hallie Shepard with a time of 19:13.50. Fenn, Graham and Shepard all had elite performances. Winston Churchill freshman Noor Aly came in fourth with a time of 19:46.30, while Walter Johnson freshman Madeline Simmons finished fifth with a time of 19:58.90. 

For the team scores portion, Walter Johnson, led by Simmons, took the first-place title with 68 points. Second was Towson (103 points) and third was Broadneck, led by Fenn (108 points).
