Week in Review: Maryland HS Indoor Track, Dec. 6 to Dec. 11


Nearly 25 teams came together for the Terry Baker Invitational. The meet was hosted by Western Maryland FAT at the Hagerstown Community College. 

Sprints

55 Meter Dash

South Hagerstown's Cole Schlotterbeck was the ultimate winner in the event. He ran an impressive 6.66, which is a current MD #9. The next couple of athletes were very close to one another. Walkersville's Andrew Simmons finished second with a time of 6.96. Tuscarora's Korell Asamoah followed Simmons in a time of 6.98. Right behind Asamoah was Middletown's Chris Brown with a fourth-place finish and time of 6.99. Schlotterbeck, Simmons, Asamoah and Brown were the only athletes to run under the seven-second margin at the meet. 

For the girls, it was a close battle. However, Walkersville's Valerie Boards walked away with the individual title after swooping below the 7.70 mark. Linganore's Melanie Barger followed directly behind in a second-place finish of 7.70. Third place was a tie between Boonsboro's Kara Yaukey and Francis Scott Key's Halie Albright. Both girls finished in a time of 7.72, but Yaukey was declared third, while Albright was deemed fourth. 

300 Meter Dash

South Hagerstown went 1-2 in the 300m event. Cole Schlotterbeck led the duo and was once again victorious in a sprinting event. Schlotterbeck took his second first-place finish at the meet in the 300m event. He finished in a time of 37.73, which is currently an MD #11. His teammate, Jacob Stoner, took second with a time of 38.94. The third-place finisher was Century's Ryan Sien in 39.16. These top 3 finishers were some of the select few that finished below the 40-second barrier. 

On the girls' side, Catoctin's Jenna Zentz was the clear winner in the event. Zentz had a fast performance of 43.76, which is a current MD #5. Century's Isabella Mastria followed behind, taking second with a time of 44.57. Mastria's performance is an MD #7. The third-place finisher was Linganore's Juliana Nardini in a time of 45.38.

500 Meter Dash

It was a close race for the 500m event. Smithsburg's Cameron Rejonis and Walkersville's Travis Buakah battled for the first-place title. However, Rejonis walked away as the champion after a solid performance of 1:10.19. Rejonis' time is a current MD #10. Buakah finished with less than a second to spare, taking second in a time of 1:10.88.

For the girls, Linganore's Mikayla Moxley had an incredible performance in the event. Moxley ran a blistering 1:21.30, which is the fastest time in the state. To add, this is a top 40 time nationally. Moxley's impressive win comes after a successful 2021 cross country season where she had at least five top 3 finishes. The next finisher was Oakdale's Ellen Gill in a time of 1:24.00. In third place was Catoctin's Jenna Zentz (1:24.13), making another top 3 performance for the meet. 

Distance

800 Meter Run

Broadneck Senior's Bryce Clark was the reigning champion in the 800m event. Clark ran an impressive 2:06.67, which is an MD #2. Linganore's Samuel Metzner was just less than a second behind, taking second with a time of 2:07.59. Metzner's performance is an MD #3. 

Regarding the girls, it was a similar outcome. This time, it was Urbana's Camryn Lowery in an MD #2 time of 2:29.67. She became the only other female athlete to break the 2:30 barrier in the season. Oakdale's Sarah Anderson finished right behind her for an MD #3 performance of 20:38.58. 

1600 Meter Run

Linganore's Jack Sears was the winner of the 1600m event after a blistering time of 4:39.53. His time is a current MD #1 and he is the only boy in the state to break 4:40 this season. Sears enters the indoor track season after a handful of wins from the 2021 cross country season. He ended the cross country season with at least nine top 10 performances, three of which were first-place wins. Second place was a close race between Broadneck Senior's Bryce Clark and Oakdale's Abhishek Mudireddy. However, Clark walked away with the second-place title with less than a second to spare. Clark finished in a time of 4:43.20, which is a current MD #2. This was also his second top 3 performance for the meet. Mudireddy finished third in 4:43.74, which is a current MD #3.

For the girls, Broadneck Senior's Mollie Fenn had a huge win in the event. Fenn led the charge in a time of 5:16.04, which granted her an astounding lead of about 12 seconds. Fenn's performance is an MD #1 and is a top 25 time in the nation. Notably, Fenn ended the 2021 cross country season with the fourth-fastest 5K (18:00) in the state. She also had at least seven top 3 performances during the season, three of which were first-place wins. Linganore's Caroline Perrone finished in second with a time of 5:28.94. Perrone was the only other girl to run under 5:30 for the meet. Perrone's performance is a current MD #3 and she also comes back from a successful cross country season. In the fall, she had at least nine top 10 finishes. 

3200 Meter Run

The 3200m event was a close race. Smithsburg's Sean Milligan and Catoctin's Alexander Contreras battled for the first-place title. However, Milligan managed to outkick Contreras for the win, taking first place in a time of 10:27.00. Contreras finished second, just less than a second behind, with a time of 10:27.38. Milligan and Contreras ran an MD #9 and MD #10, respectively. Both athletes were strong cross country competitors in the fall. Just four seconds away was Middletown's Baron Ropp, taking third in a time of 10:31.44, which is an MD #11.

The girls' race produced incredible times. Boonsboro's Caroline Matthews was the girls' champion in a time of 11:42.50, which is currently the fastest time in the state and a near top 25 time nationally. Matthews made herself a huge name in the recent cross country season after seven first-place finishes and two second-place finishes. She only ever performed in the top 2 throughout the season, never finishing below second place. Urbana's Ivy Coldren was another strong competitor in the event. She finished less than seconds away from Matthews, taking second in a time of 11:44.00. Coldren's performance is the second-fastest time in the state and is a top 30 time in the nation. The third-place finisher was Linganore's Katelin DiFilippis with a time of 11:54.70. Her performance is a current MD #3. Matthews, Coldren and DiFilippis were the only girls to break 12 in the 3200m event. 

Hurdles

55 Meter Hurdles

Westminster's Cameron Rucker was the 55m hurdles champion after a fast 8.56. Rucker's performance is a current MD #6. He was followed by Middletown's Luke Humble (2nd, 8.85) and Liberty's Colin Apellaniz (3rd, 8.97). Century's Jane Brewer was the girls' champion after a dominating performance of 9.40. This time is a current MD #6. She was followed by Williamsport's Mia Parker (9.89) and Middletown's Ava Allen (9.91) in second and third, respectively.

Field Events

High Jump

Tuscarora's Edwin Niemandt and Westminster's Justin Condon tied in the high jump event. Both athletes reached a height of 5-10.00, which is a current MD #3. On the other hand, three girls tied in the event: Francis Scott Key's Ashleigh Porter, Linganore's Juliana Nardini and Tuscarora's Christiana Hinds. All three athletes had a mark of 4-10.00, which is a current MD #5. 

Pole Vault

Oakdale's Samuel Starrs had an incredible performance in the pole vault event. Starrs reached a height of 15-06.00, which is a current MD #1, as well as the fourth-best mark in the nation. To add, his performance ranks as an MD No.2 All-Time and is a new 3A record. South Carroll's Peyton Thomas (12-06.00) and Gov. Thomas Johnson's Brayden Ecker (11-06.00) followed in second and third, respectively. Thomas' performance is an MD #4, while Ecker's performance is an MD #5. 

For the girls, Gov. Thomas Johnson's Elisa Ramos soared to new heights with a new PR in the pole vault event. Ramos reached a mark of 11-01.00, which is an MD #1 and a top 35 performance in the nation. She was followed by Westminster's Sarah Gassman (2nd, 10-00.00) and Middletown's Ava Allen (3rd, 9-06.00). Gassman's performance is an MD #3, while Allen's is an MD #4. 

Shot Put 

Frederick's Adam Moezaw was the undeniable winner for the shot put event. Moezaw threw a distance of 49-06.00, which is an MD #2. It is also a top 40 performance in the nation. Catoctin's Brody Buffington followed behind with a distance of 43-06.00, which is a current MD #6. The third-place finisher was Williamsport's Dylan Parker with 42-05.00, an MD #8. 

Regarding the girls' performances, Urbana went 1-2 in the shot put event. Fiona Agyekum led the duo with a first-place performance of 37-01.00. Agyekum's distance is a current MD #2 and a top 20 performance in the nation. Her teammate, Samantha Heyison, was second with a throw of 31-04.00. 

Notable Race: Girls' 4x800 Meter Relay

The top three teams ran the top three times in the state: Broadneck (1st, 10:40.95), North Hagerstown (2nd, 10:49.89) and Urbana (3rd, 10:50.17).  So far, in the state of Maryland, these three teams have been the only ones to break the 10-minute barrier in the event.


Team Scores

For the team scores, the Urbana girls, led by top performers like Camryn Lowery, Ivy Coldren and Fiona Agyekumtook home the top honors after scoring 82.5 points. The boys' team title was close. However, the Linganore boys (45 points) ended up taking home the top honors with top performances by Jack Sears and Samuel Metzner. South Hagerstown finished in second after being short by one point.
