Week in Review: Maryland HS Indoor Track, Dec. 6 to Dec. 11


Approximately seven teams came together for the Carroll County Indoors Outdoors meet. The meet was hosted by Westminster High School on their home turf. 

Sprints

55 Meter Dash

Manchester Valley's Maverick Mezaache won the event after a first-place finish of 7.12. He was followed by Winters Mill's Isaiah Rivera, taking second with a time of 7.16. Then, another Manchester Valley athlete made it into the ranks; Ben Pitta finished third with a time of 7.22.

Another Manchester Valley athlete was first in the event. For the girls, Lalya Cox was the champion in a time of 7.93. Century's Abigail Mastria followed close behind in 7.98. Cox and Mastria were the only two girls to run underneath the eight-second margin.

300 Meter Dash

Winters Mill's Isaiah Rivera had another top 3 performance in a sprinting event. Rivera won the 300m event after a solid performance of 40.13. Manchester Valley's Quinn Favorite followed in second with a time of 40.30. Rivera and Favorite were the only athletes to run sub-41.

On the girls' side, Century went 1-2. Abigail Mastria led the duo in a first-place finish of 45.79. Her teammate, Cailyn Stine, finished second in 47.24.

500 Meter Dash

Manchester Valley's Creighton Ament was the 500m champion after a solid performance of 1:18.75, which granted him a lead of about three seconds. Century's Anthony Crognale (1:21.79) and Winters Mill's Eddie Loudenclos (1:21.90) finished second and third, respectively. 

The Century girls completely swept the event going 1-2-3-4. The pack was led by Cailyn Stine, a freshman, with a first-place finish of 1:31.30. To add, she had an impressive lead of six seconds. Her teammates, in order, followed right behind: Kaci Laufer (1.37.38), Sophia Parker (1:42.75) and Molly Hieatzman (1:43.52).

Distance

800 Meter Run

The Manchester Valley boys put on an impressive show after going 1-2-3 in the mid-distance event. Junior Carter Knox led the trio in a time of 2:11.83, which gave him an astounding lead over 10 seconds. To add, his performance is a current MD #3. His teammates, Christian Childs (2:21.00) and Patrick Ziegenfuss (2:22.13)

Regarding the girls, Century's Elizabeth Mitroka and Westminster's Emily Orton battled for the individual title. However, Mitroka managed to outkick Orton for the win. Mitroka won with a time of 2:49.08, while Orton was second with a time of 2:49.25. Both girls were the only two break 2:50 in the event, and it is important to note that both are freshmen.

1600 Meter Run

Once again, the Manchester Valley boys swept another distance event. This time, the team went 1-2 in the 1600m run. Carter Knox was the leader again, finishing first in a time of 4:52.41. He was the only athlete to break five minutes in the event, and his performance is an MD #7. His teammate, Patrick Ziegenfuss, finished second with a time of 5:05.13. 

Manchester Valley's Rubie Goffena was the clear winner for the 1600m event. She ran a time of 5:42.18, which gave her a lead of over eight seconds. This performance is a current MD #7. Goffena enters the indoor track season after a strong 2021 cross country season. She won both the Carroll County Championships and the Westminster Invitational in the fall. To add, she ended up breaking the challenging 5-minute barrier in the 1600m event earlier this year in the outdoor season. In second place was Century's Emily Mitroka who became the only other girl to break six minutes at the event. 

3200 Meter Run

Winters Mill's Jackson Steinbrenner was the 3200m champion after an impressive performance of 11:03.89, which granted him a lead of over 13 seconds. 

Hurdles

55 Meter Hurdles

Manchester Valley went 1-2 in the boys' and girls' 55m hurdles. For the boys, Victor Perricone led the duo in a winning time of 9:59. His teammate, Kai Chwang, finished second after a performance of 9.83. For the girls, Lauren Francino led the duo in a time of 10.47. Her teammate, Carrie Moore, followed behind in a time of 10.69.

Field Events

High Jump

Westminster's Justin Condon improved on his MD #3 performance of 5-10.00 and finished as the sole high jump winner at the meet. This time, Condon won the event in a new season-best of 6-00.00, which is an MD #1. For the girls, Manchester Valley went 1-2-3: Carrie Moore (1st, 4-08.00), Bethany Kleiner (2nd, 4-06.00) and Lauren Francino (3rd, 4-04.00)

Pole Vault

Century went 1-2 for the boys. Louis Losoya led the duo with a mark of 8-06.00. His teammate, Ryan Mitchell, followed in second with 6-06.00. For the girls, Manchester Valley's Carrie Moore won the event with a height of 9-00.00.

Shot Put

Manchester Valley's Joe Dubsky was the clear winner in the shot put event after throwing a distance of 39-01.00. On the girls' side, Winters Mill's Naomi Whitlow finished first with 29-09.50. Westminster's Emma Reaves was close behind with 29-04.00.

Team Scores

For the team scores, the Manchester Valley team swept both titles. For the girls, they scored 163.5 points after top performances by Carrie Moore, Lauren Francino and Rubie Goffena. The boys dominated even more with a total of 178 points. The boys were led by Carter KnoxPatrick Ziegenfuss and more.
