Class 3A Girls Preview
Team Preview - While most of the state classification races this year will be close, the 3A girl's race looks like it will be a runaway for Severna Park. The #1 ranked team in the state has looked strong all season and has the ability to place 5 runners in the top 25 and should easily win. They also have great depth as their #7 may beat most other teams' #3-4 runners.
The battle for second however is much more interesting as several teams have a shot to make the podium. Howard comes in on paper as the next-best team. They placed second at the Howard County Championship and won the 3A South Regional. They have a true number 1 in Claire Sivitz, who along with Katerine Morey from Winston Churchill, has had one of the best freshman seasons in Maryland history. Kiley Mann is also a very strong runner for the Lions and has the ability to place top 5. The emergence of Rai Mondal may make all the difference as she has PR'd by over a minute in the last several weeks and ran 19:47 for 5k last week, giving the Lions a very strong 1-2-3.
Battling them will be Thomas Wootton, Dulaney, and Linganore. Thomas Wootton is led by Charlotte Chang and Victoria Ketzler who both can place in the top 15. The Patriots do fall off a little after that but if their 3-4-5 can run well, they will certainly be in contention. Linganore finished only 5 points behind Wootton at the 3A West Regional. They have a strong number 1 in Meredith Moyer and possibly the strongest #5 out of the pack which may come in crucial in this close race. Dulaney won the 3A North Regional and looks to be peaking at the right time!
Individual Preview: The 3A Girls race looks to be between 3 girls, Carther Brotherton (Great Mills), Lauren Stine (North Hagerstown), and Claire Sivitz (Howard). Sivitz has looked great these last few weeks. She easily won the Howard County Championships and the 3A South Regional, running 18:36 for 5k, the 9th fastest time for a freshmen ever in Maryland. Lauren Stine has also looked strong, winning the Frederick County Championships and the 4A West Regional. Her best performance may have been her 3-mile run at Frank Keyser when she ran 17:38 over the fast Boonsboro Course. Carter Brotherton may have had the best 2 weeks of any girl in the state. She beat Elena Blodnikar by a second at the SMAC Championship and easily won the 3A Regional. Brotherton was the only one of the three who ran Bull Run earlier this season. While she did not run poorly, she did struggle more on the hilly course. Her past few races have been on a very fast flat course so it will be interesting to see if she can get through the hills of Hereford! Expect these 3 to be together till the last 400m.
MileSplit Maryland Prediction:
