Asfaw came into the 2016 season with expectations of both a state championship and a berth to the NXN Championships in December. Asfaw only lost one race in the DC area all season on a photo finish in the mudfest at the Glory Days Invitational. Other than that, Asfaw was virtually unstoppable, with his fastest performance coming in a dominant victory at the Montgomery County Championships where he ran a then-5K season best of 15:33.80. After capturing the third state championship of his high school career, Asfaw returned to Cary, NC, where he finished just one spot away from qualifying for NXN in 2015. This year he got his revenge, placing fourth in a personal best 15:15.00 and qualifying for NXN. There he finished 94th in the final race of his outstanding high school cross country career.
