The team battle for the girl's title still has Oakland Mills coming out on top, but much closer than on the boy's side. In our projections, Oakland Mills scores 80.1 points compared to second-place Friendly, which has 62.6

Oakland Mills will rely on several key athletes. Alicia Hall has been a powerhouse in the jumping events. She is seeded 1st in Triple, 2nd in Long, and 6th in High jump and could potentially score over 20 points alone. Oluwasemilore Olakunle unfortunately false started in the 100m prelims at Regionals however she still qualified for the 200, 110m Hurdles, and will surely be on 2 relay teams. She is one of the top sprinters in the state. OM also has the ability to win all three sprint relays, which would result in a crucial 30 points. 

Friendly will rely on standout sprinter Tressia Davis. Davis is the top seed in the 100, 200, and 400 and will try to win all 3 at states. The toughest may be the 200, given the short recovery time from the 400m final to the 200m final, but if there is an athlete in the state who can do it, it's Davis. Chelsea Whitehurst will also be a key athlete for Friendly as she is seeded first in the 100m Hurdles and 2nd in the 300m Hurdles. 

Other Top Athletes to Watch

Temi Ariyo (Overlea) - Ariyo is one of the top distance runners in the state this season, regardless of classification. She will be entered in the 800, 1600, and 3200, and will be the big favorite in all of them. 

Ava Allen (Middletown) - Allen has cleared 13-0 this season in Pole Vault and will be looking not only to win this event but to break the overall state record of 12-04 in the process. 

Caroline Mercer (Rising Sun) - Mercer has thrown over 120 feet in Disc, one of the top marks in the entire state this year


Editors Note: For the projections below, we decided to filter results by who qualified for states in specific events, and then use their season-best time or mark. 

We did not feel that solely using the Regional Merge results was as accurate as using season best. For example, in the girls 2A 3200, Hereford had 3 girls, Estelle Snider, Sylvia Snider, and Rebekka Hillier, who ran 11:57, 11:57, and 12:02 at their region meet. They have PRs of 11:09, 11:22, and 11:23 which rank as the 3rd, 4th, and 6th best 3200m time in 2A this season respectfully. If we just used regional merge results they would be projected to score no points at States, which is extremely unlikely. There are many scenarios like this across all 4 classifications. 

While there are still issues with using season-best time for State meet projections, such as not accounting for athletes getting tired who are competing in multiple events and possibly not being able to fully load up a relay team, we feel it's the most accurate way.
